I left my heart in San Francisco....
For memorial weekend, we went to San Francisco, and just like Tony Bennet says in his song, I also left my heart there. It has become one of my favourite cities in the world. The combination of New York, China, Italy and the ocean makes it a truly amazing place.
We arrived late on Friday night, and on Saturday morning we got up and of course ate breakfast at a diner. I really love diners, and that is one thing that make these cities (New york and San Francisco) so great.
Then we walked over to the mandatory cable cars, we had to wait for about an hour in line, but it was actually worth it. After a rollcoaster ride across the whole city, we finally came to Fishermans Wharf. There were lots of tourists there of course, but a really nice place to stroll, and eat. Of course the views over at the iconic Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge, made it even better.
Walking along the docks, we saw a big crowd of people, and a strange noise coming from the water. It was a big Sea Lion, swimming there, waiting for the fishermen to feed him with fish.
After a great lunch in the sun, where were off to China Town. China Town is the biggest China Town outside of China (of course in China they only calls them towns....). It is amazing, how you one second can be in a modern US city, and the next feel like you are walking in China.
In the evening we had a great dinner and went to a place recommended to me by a colleague, it is called First Crush and they have a great menu of wines.
On Sunday we took a tour up to the wine country, Sonoma and Napa valleys. It was one of the most memorable trips I have taken. The combination of awesome wine, great views and great food, made this to a day truly to be remembered.
We visited three different vineyards (Cline, Nicholson and Madonna), and we calculated that we tried about 20-25 different wines during the whole day. Everything from Pinot Noir to Chardonnay.
On Monday we managed to squeeze in a trip to Alcztraz, before our plan was to leave in the evening. Alcatraz was interesting and surreal, it was much smaller than I expected, but it was a really interesting place to visit, and the audio tour they had made it very real, as it was actual convicts and guards telling you their story. I understand it must have been a awful place to be as a prisoner, as San Francisco is so very close, but yet so far away.
All and all it was a wonderful trip, and I will definately come back, maybe with some more days up in the wine country....?
